Severino Abuin, the founder of “El Miño” Chorizo
born in Lugo, Spain, arrived at Havana, Cuba in 1920. His career
started as a clerk in an Importer and Wholesaler company.
Two
years later, he was promoted to salesman and worked in this capacity
until 1925.
In
that same year, fondly remembering his childhood spent at the
Rio El Miño in Northwestern Spain, Mr. Abuin started to
manufacture chorizo under the brand name “El Miño”
in a small location in Cuba. By 1930, he had expanded the facilities
and rented a second location.
Success
continued for Mr. Abuin as a plant was built in Cuba in 1947 and
expanded again in 1957.
Severino Abuin began exporting chorizo to the United States in
1959. Unfortunately, in 1960 Fidel Castro confiscated Severino
Abuin & Co, and all its manufacturing facilities.
He
returned to Spain, but in 1969, came to the United States, and
became associated with a sausage plant in NJ. Here, in 1972, he
builds his own establishment in Elizabeth town in what became
his greatest achievement at the age of 65.
